Expressive Arts Therapy
Expressive Arts Therapy is a multimodal approach that uses movement, sound, imagery and storytelling to facilitate psychotherapeutic change in an individual within a therapeutic relationship. It is the practice of using these tools in an integrated way, to nurture human growth, development, and healing.
"Expressive Arts Therapy is an intermodal field combining the study of psychopathology, health and illness, and the arts." - The European Graduate School.
Through the process of using imagery, visual art, storytelling, movement, poetry, basically art-making, clients experience inner transformation and are able to express what words alone cannot. It allows them to share and communicate what they find difficult to do using verbal cues. Also, certain traumas and felt experiences which are somatic (body-based or pre-verbal) may be accessed with more ease and comfort for the client through the Expressive Arts.
